The website http://www.multidose.org now has a novel ASHP toolkit and resource centre. This is able to provide guidelines on the implementation of a MMMD (Multidose Medication Dispensing for Discharge) service. This was made by an experienced group of professional experts and pharmaceutical company managers. If used accordingly, this will aid scientific personnel to implement a novel method for MMDD which should lead to less waste originating from pharmacies.

In a large number of American states, the local laws are permissible of 'multidose' medicines, including: eye drops, inhalers, insulin pens and other such medications that have been prescribed to patients. These medications when prescribed to patients will have appropriate labelling after they are initially dispensed to patients or additionally, they will first be given an alternate label before they are dispensed to patients.

Tools are readily available from the ASHP MMDD resource Centre that enable the implementation of the above mentioned significant service. These tools are free and can easily be downloaded by medical practitioners or pharmacists and can be altered to reflect the individual needs and requirements of every specified health system.

Other tools and resources will aid end users in the monitoring of any state laws applicable in the vicinity, measuring their medication and drug waste levels and will also aid them in contacting administrators of health systems in order to initiate this novel service. Another useful item that can be downloaded from the ASHP MMDD Resource Centre is a 'how to guide', this will assist in the further reduction of waste and the regulation of expenditure.
